An extended trailer has arrived for famed animation house Studio Ghibli’s first foray into live action and I think it is safe to say that the results are every bit as impressive as their work in animation.
Created for a gallery exhibition with Neon Genesis Evangelion director Hideaki Anno, Giant God Warrior Appears In Tokyo is a live action short film based on creatures from Hayao Miyazaki’s landmark Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind- a film on which Anno served as key animator. Created entirely without CGI, this is old school Japanese scifi executed through the extensive use of miniatures. And it looks absolutely fabulous. What do you say, Anno? Ghibli? Any chance you’d turn this into a feature?
A bizarre, live action prequel to Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind? But done as a short kaiju epic? Sign me up!
As one of the few white men who was inducted into the "Garo Understanding Society" I must say you don't get it. They made me fix telephones and shoes in a smoky sub-basement of Nakano Broadway. They made me smoke 3 short packs of Peace cigarettes a day. They called it the "Tsuge Yoshiharu reprogramming course". I have earned my understanding of Garo. And since I have been through this I can tell you that you don't understand Garo for the following reasons:
Also, sorry to anyone who finds my rants about this irritating, I totally understand, and I also understand if you disagree with me. Just for me personally, I got into making D.I.Y. comics (or maybe I should say comix just to piss people off who think they’re on the outside of some inside joke) because I liked that it was a scene where people could create what they wanted without the worry of some boss coming in and telling people what to do. So I get really irked when these bosses come in and try to co-opt and push around the people who decided they didn’t need them.
sounds like dan is butt-hurt about other ppl being interested in japanese bizarro comics. “that’s my favorite band! you can’t have them!” kind of vibe.
Yeah, definitely an attitude too of someone who doesn’t know a lot about the subject. I don’t think he knows much manga besides King Terry and some other Garo related stuff, but needs to go on these rants so he can feel like he’s an authority on the subject. “You don’t know anything about punk. I read Johnny Rotten’s autobiography and I bet you don’t even know who Richard Hell is.” Basically same attitude.
It seems like Nadel had a minor issue that blew out of proportion, leading to him ranting and raving about a slew of other things he issues with that were only tangentially related.
I think he’s probably just one of those nerds who was picked on a lot for his interests, then later made a career out of them, and so now he feels like he has some sort of power to oppress people who don’t do things his way. Sorry, most of us cartoonists don’t make a living off of comics so we don’t need to follow anyone’s rules on how we get our work published.
hey there, would you mind elaborating on the nadel-related controversy? I'm very curious
Basically he wrote this article http://www.tcj.com/no-good-reason/ bashing people who use kickstarter and the entire garo tribute project. Ive never really like dan nadel. He’s been very rude to me and other friends on several occasions. He’s a complete narcissist and hypocrite who I really believe shouldn’t have a say in the way undergound/alternative comics are produced, but he seems to think he does.
Zach you reblogged that photo of Lars from Rancid explaining his tatto. Have you seen the movie it's from, "The Other F Word"?. It's pretty stupid; mostly in that they put forward the idea that Mark Hoppus from blink 182 and Tony Hawk are "punk icons"
Hahahahahaha I haven’t seen it but that sounds awful.
I mean, for what it was when it came out, it was good: physics, animations, and all that. It’s just the gameplay that sort of does it in 8 years later
I think I was expecting a kind of story heavy game with a lot of exploration (which are typically the kind of games I’m more interested in) rather than a game that’s totally on rails and the most effect you have on what’s happening is how well you can shoot stuff and occasionally what you can throw on the ground to jump on if your supposed to not be able to walk on the ground for some dumb reason.
I should have looked into this shit before I bought it. I thought it was supposed to have an amazing story, not “oh hey whats up follow me. ok i locked you out of where I am so we can’t hang out anymore see ya just keep running straight until you have to put a bunch of stuff on see-saws. Here’s a bug thing in your face.”
